History of Kanak Bhawan

Kanak Bhawan Ayodhya is one of the most visited religious place in India. It's dedicated to Lord Rama and Devi Sita. Every year, a large number of pilgrims from all across the nation come to the temple to make offering to the deities. According to legend, Kaikeyi gave Devi Sita Kanak Bhawan as soon as she married Lord Rama. Legend has it that Vishwakarma supervised the building of a celestial palace on this site at King Dasharath's request. It is said to be a private space for Lord Rama and Devi Sita. The rule that no other male was allowed in the palace was carefully enforced, even by Hanuman. The temple was apparently constructed by Vikramaditya and refurbished in 1891 AD by Vrishbhanu Kunwari, the Queen of Orchha.

One of the edicts states that the statues of Lord Ram and Devi Sita in Kanak Bhawan were erected by Dwapar Yug Maharaj Kush. The more popular view, however, is that Lord Krishna placed another pair of deities on the mound before Samudragupta and King Vikramaditya rebuilt the temple. According to legend, the shrine is dedicated to three pairs of consecrated idols that each feature Devi Sita and Lord Rama. The largest was installed by Rani Sri Vrishbhan Kunwari, while the medium was established by King Vikramaditya. Lord Krishna is said to have given the smallest one to a woman and asked her to bury the idol in the ground where she will be buried after death. This was supposed to be discovered by none other than Vikramaditya.
